Title: Ready or not, here we—
Subtitle: A meandering of AAPI identity in process
This work began with an invitation from Jesus Sanchez, to share or read something related to the past year's rise in anti-Asian hate crime. Like many things regarding identity and culture, my emotions and thoughts on this are something I'm still processing and wanted to do with care.
Here is what arose out of my current state: a mix of personal story, snapshots of my own Asian American experience, combined with words and ideas from other artists, academics and activists.
Now in its current state before you, this work was completed in collaboration with the musical talents of Nathan Kwon and Phoebe Lin; an honor and pleasure to do this in community.
Special thanks to dear friends S. W. Yang & Lisa Low for being the sweetest of sounding boards.

“This illustration depicts the Red Dragon Mahjong tile, whose character represents ‘center’ or ‘target.’ This tile symbolizes the elderly, the heart of our community, who were victim to hate crime during Covid-19. The split in the tile expresses the physical and emotional wounds of hate crime and the larger divide racism has caused in our country. StopAsianHate is a needed movement to promote anti-racism and to tear down systemic oppression.”
